Firm
Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis (LTL) is an innovative, award-winning architecture partnership founded in 1997
by Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki and David J. Lewis, located in New York City. LTL
actively pursues a diverse range of work, from large scale academic and cultural buildings to interior
architecture to competitions. LTL's approach is to realize inventive solutions that turn the very
constraints of each project into the design trajectory, exploring overlaps between space, program,
form, budget and materials.
The firm's work has been extensively published and exhibited internationally. LTL Architects received
the 2007 National Design Award for Interior Architecture from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design
Museum and was selected as one of six American architectural firms featured in the U.S. Pavilion
at the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale. In addition, LTL was included in the 2000 National Design
Triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt and was selected in December 2000 by Architectural Record as one of
ten firms representing a Vanguard in Contemporary Architecture.
Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis are co-authors of two books, the monograph Opportunistic Architecture
(Princeton Architectural Press, 2008) and Situation Normal....Pamphlet Architecture #21 (Princeton Architectural
Press, 1998).
Architectural Projects: LTL has successfully designed and managed large-scale institutional building projects
while achieving a high level of design excellence. In the fall of 2004, LTL completed Bornhuetter Hall,
a 48,000
square ft. residence hall for the College of Wooster. As a precursor to this project, LTL produced an extensive
feasibility study of the campus's residential facilities. Most recently, the firm has completed the design phase
for Arthouse at the Jones Center, a contemporary arts center in Austin, Texas scheduled for construction in 2009.
Other built work includes offices for New York University's Strategic Assessment, Planning and Design Department
and a renovation of the public spaces at Brown University's BioMedical Center. A 5,500 square ft housing complex
for New York City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development was completed in April 2007. Award-winning
restaurant designs in New York City include Xing Restaurant,
Lozoo Restaurant, Fluff Bakery,
Dash Dogs and Tides Restaurant. LTL has completed retail
spaces in New York, Washington and North Carolina, and
residential projects throughout the U.S.
Academic: LTL is highly invested in education and the academic environment. Paul Lewis is an assistant professor
and the Director of Graduate Studies at Princeton University School of Architecture. Marc Tsurumaki is an adjunct
professor of architecture at Columbia University. David J. Lewis is an associate professor at Parsons The New School
for Design, where he directed the Master of Architecture Program from 2002-2007.
Sustainability: The firm is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and includes two LEED Accredited
Professionals (AP). LTL is currently completing the design for a LEED-Silver project in Las Vegas, Nevada. The firm
actively engages sustainable practices and has produced the acclaimed exhibition designs for The Green House: New
Directions in Sustainable Architecture and Design at the National Building Museum and Ten Shades of Green, commissioned
by the Architectural League of New York.
Firm: LTL maintains a collaborative and energetic studio environment jointly directed by the three founding partners,
who are deeply involved in each project from inception to completion. LTL is licensed to practice in the states of
New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, Nevada, Ohio and Rhode Island. Additionally, the firm holds NCARB Council
Certification to facilitate reciprocal registration within the United States and parts of Canada.
